Sex Party Calls on PM to Visit a Brothel |

Australian Sex Party leader, Fiona Patten, has called on the Prime Minister to visit an Asian brothel in Australia so he can see first hand the negative effects of his government’s appalling changes to visas for sex workers.
Immigration Minister Chris Evans’ plans to give trafficked sex workers a new 45 day access visa without altering the government’s prohibition on working visas for bona fide sex workers. This would result in even more misery and sex slavery in Australia, according to Ms Patten.
“Solving the problem of illegal sex workers in this country is a no-brainer”, she said. “It simply requires the PM to acknowledge that prostitution is a legitimate profession or calling, for many women”.
Ms Patten, who worked as a sex worker advocate in the 1990s, said the federal government’s ban on working visas for sex workers was the major reason that allowed sex trafficking to flourish in Australia. “If bona fide sex workers were able to apply for a working visa to work in a legal brothel in Australia for six or 12 months at a time, the low-life pimps and operators who traffic women into this country would have the ground cut out from under them and they would have nothing to offer these women”, she said. “The problem is Kevin Rudd’s morality will not allow him to acknowledge sex work as a formal and legitimate job even though it is legal in most states. Meanwhile his moral ‘dilemma’ is ruining many women’s lives.”
The Australian Sex Party would lobby strongly for a change to visa and discrimination policies to overcome this problem, if elected to the Senate at the next federal election. Legitimate sex workers who applied for a working visa would have to demonstrate a good working knowledge of sex work practises and safe sex techniques. They would have to pay tax, superannuation, supply a nominated residential address and have a guarantee of returning to the country of origin, when they first entered Australia.
