Sex Party and ex-senator in mayoral bid PDF  | Print |  E-mail

A Sex Party member has won top billing on the Brisbane Lord Mayor ballot paper next month.

The names were drawn today [27/03/2012] and Sex Party mayoral candidate Rory Killen will be the first name on the ballot followed by former Democrats senator Andrew Bartlett who is running as the Queensland Greens candidate.

Labor party candidate Ray Smith will have the third spot followed by independent Chris Carson and sitting LNP Brisbane Lord Mayor Graham Quirk was the last name drawn in the ballot.

Cr Quirk was unperturbed by the result, saying he would take it in his stride.

"If there's one thing we've learnt from Labor's thumping on the weekend it's that if voters think you've got the right policies and vision to govern then they will seek you out no matter where you are on the ballot," he said.

Mr Smith said he was "very happy" with the result but did not have any superstitions about drawning any place on the ballot saying he had met more than 25,000 people, knocked on 15,000 doors and spoke to 3000 people on the phone.

"I've always found in my life the harder I work the luckier I get," he said.

"It's fantastic to be in the jaws of the campaign."

Nominations for candidates in the April 28 poll closed at noon on Tuesday.

Mr Bartlett was a Queensland senator between 1997 and 2008 and will join fellow Greens members who are contesting 19 of Brisbane's 26 wards.

The Sex Party has put its exclusion from the state election behind it to endorse Mr Killen.

The party was barred from contesting the Queensland election for not having enough registered members.

Mr Killen is running as an independent who is endorsed by the Sex Party.

He is campaigning on a platform that includes reducing noise restrictions to encourage more house parties, and protecting entertainment venues from "burdensome" zoning requirements.

Former premier Peter Beattie's wife Heather Beattie will be another candidate to watch when she contests the Central ward for Labor.

Sex Party member, Rory Killen has nominated to run for the office of Brisbane Lord Mayor. We are very proud and excited to support him in this endeavor. Below is Rory's statement outlining why he decided to run and some of the issues he will be pushing for.

"Brisbane’s musicians have worked hard to create an international reputation for new and exciting work. The city has not supported this.

As Lord Mayor I’ll foster independent music by protecting venues from burdensome zoning requirements, connecting the city’s entertainment precincts with improved late night transport, and restore Brisbane’s reputation as the City of House Parties with reduced noise restrictions in the inner city.”

Sexual politics put a black mark on Brisbane’s reputation with the recent Adshel fiasco, during which the Australian Christian Lobby launched a homophobic attack on safe-sex advertising. “Safer sex campaigners deserve material support from council. I’m ready to provide as many bus shelters, billboards or public spaces as necessary to ensure the great work of sexual health campaigners can continue.

I’ll further enhance public health by establishing and funding a safe injecting facility in the Valley – protecting both users and the wider community. I’ll work with state government to ensure harm minimisation and public health forms the corner stone of drug policy in Brisbane.

I’m excited to offer Brisbane a Sex Party choice for Lord Mayor – a real alternative for an open minded and modern Brisbane."
