The truth about The Sex Party, The Greens and Those preferences

Last week following the publication of the Group Voting Tickets (GVTs), Greens supporters were organised into a highly effective flying squad with the intention of shooting down the Sex Party on Facebook and Twitter. The reason? We had preferenced an old-school, 1990s party, that most young Greens supporters would hardly have heard of, called One Nation, ahead of the Greens. In our opinion it gave us an edge over beating the Greens which is what we are in the election to do. NOT to get them elected!

Based on precedent* and the opinion of the most pre-eminent analyst in Australia, Antony Green, we formed the view that One Nation would not be elected regardless of where we placed them in the flow of preferences. Antony Green summarised “…..and the refusal of the major parties to direct any preferences the party's way will in the end cut off its path to election.”

So if we got it wrong well then Antony Green got it wrong too.
We reckoned that there was a preference flow advantage to us putting this party above the Greens and so we went for it. If you don’t play, you don’t win.

Expect plenty of fireworks from Sex Party candidate

She's a self-confessed ''Kambah bogan'' standing for the Senate on September 7 and promising to bring fireworks back to Fyshwick.

Sex Party candidate Deborah Avery wants to see the return of ''the traditional family bonfire night'' and for the ACT to receive two extra senators in the Federal Parliament.

With 13 years' experience running the online adult accessory store The Pleasure Box, the 44-year-old said she was a reluctant candidate. She is studying to be a sex and relationship counsellor.

Response to Justice Action newspaper

Australian Sex Party response to the Justice Action newspaper that goes to all prisoners in Australia.

The Sex Party is a party that formulates policy based on evidence and not on morality or what 'appears' to be right.  It is for this reason that we seek to legalise all recreational drugs and take them out of the criminal justice portfolio. We believe that drugs need to be treated as a medical or health issue. Everyone uses drugs. Politicians, judges, lawyers, police officers and prison officers are no different from anyone else. Whether they be pain killers, alcohol, heroin, coffee, marijuana or tobacco, we all use something to change mood and consciousness. Current drug policy is based on a 'my drug is superior to yours' attitude and not on evidence of harm.

Minor party leaders call for overhaul of 'corrupt' Senate preferencing system

Some minor party leaders are calling for an overhaul of Australia's Senate preferencing system, calling it "corrupt" and claiming that deals have gone unhonoured.

The deadline for political parties to get their Senate preferences deals lodged with the Australian Electoral Commission was Saturday, but it has been confirmed that some failed to lodge their ticket in time.

Australian voters can either vote above or below the line, with most opting for the simpler, above-the-line option, which leaves the political party of choice to direct where the preferences go.

Enews - Happy Birthday To Us

Hi,

Today is the Sex Party's birthday! And what a 24 hours it has been!

We are now campaigning in our second federal election. I have spent the day discussing how we will get our message out in what will be five very short weeks. And I was pretty disappointed that most of the conversations focussed on money. If we could direct the money that is spent on an election campaign into housing the homeless or providing better sex education, we would be well ahead as a country.

I hate to sound like an upstart but the government says that we have a huge multi-billion dollar deficit that requires deep cuts in government spending. I don't doubt that there are ways for the government to save money. I come from a small business background and I know we can always find ways to save. But I always look for opportunities to raise funds rather than slash them.

Hi,

This weekend I got to meet a bunch of brilliant people who were volunteering for us.
We were all from different backgrounds but we all had a lot in common. We all thought that the war on drugs had failed, that people should be able to die with dignity, that adults should be treated like adults and that sex was not a dirty word. We also felt pretty comfortable wearing a bright yellow t-shirt.

Volunteering for a political party, especially a small one like ours, is an amazing experience. You become an active part of the democratic process and play an important role in challenging the two party system that is outdated and in desperate need of change. A greater variety of voices in parliament can only improve this.

Enews - Slogans wont stop or save asylum seekers

Hi,

Last week we saw Kevin Rudd successfully outdo Abbott on asylum seeker rhetoric. Their constant slogans and one-liners will not stop the boats or protect our borders. Nor will they protect legitimate refugees.

In all honesty, we can't say that the Sex Party has the definitive answer to this problem but we know that none of the three major parties has either.

As a civil liberties party we cannot support the locking up of people, especially children, so we must look for a better option.

Enews - Getting to know us

Hi,

On the weekend I was fortunate enough to spend a day with some of our Victorian candidates and supporters.

There was such a range of expertise there, scientists, lawyers, accountants, students, a theatre producer and even a swimming teacher. They had great energy, ideas and enthusiasm for the party.
