Hi,

Today is the Sex Party's birthday! And what a 24 hours it has been!

We are now campaigning in our second federal election. I have spent the day discussing how we will get our message out in what will be five very short weeks. And I was pretty disappointed that most of the conversations focussed on money. If we could direct the money that is spent on an election campaign into housing the homeless or providing better sex education, we would be well ahead as a country.

I hate to sound like an upstart but the government says that we have a huge multi-billion dollar deficit that requires deep cuts in government spending. I don't doubt that there are ways for the government to save money. I come from a small business background and I know we can always find ways to save. But I always look for opportunities to raise funds rather than slash them.

So…here's an idea to discuss around the dinner table. What if churches paid their fair share of taxes? If the money that they earn is spent on charity work, well of course, it should be tax free. But if it is being used to run a breakfast cereal company or purchase a block of units or to invest on the short term money market, then why shouldn't they pay the same tax as their competitors. If every religion in Australia paid their fair share of tax it would be worth billions to Treasury and we'd balance the budget overnight. We're preparing detailed costings for Treasury as we speak!

And what if we treated marijuana the same way that we treat alcohol? That is, we tax and regulate the product. Sure, you can still grow your own the same as you can make your own beer. But if you want to provide the product commercially, then you need to be licensed and taxed. Such a scheme would be worth millions if not billions to Treasury as well.

I really love a birthday and my dear departed Dad always said that for every decade you have lived, you should get a week of birthday. The party doesn’t quite qualify for a week but I think that we will try and celebrate throughout this campaign. Come and join us!
