At today’s Sydney ballot paper draw the Sex Party’s Andrew Patterson drew no.3 spot from a field of seven candidates.
Four of the candidates for Sydney attended the draw including Christian Democrat Peter Madden. When invited by the Returning Officer to shake the ballot box Mr Madden invoked the power of God or Jesus to affect the outcome. Unfortunately his magic spell resulted in the ALP candidate drawing the important no.1 spot. Madden did get spot no. 2 but with the Sex Party backed candidate Andrew Patterson drawing spot no. 3 what does that say about God’s view on The Greens, Libs, Fishing Party and sitting MP Clover Moore who drew the last no.7 spot? I thought God might have given the Fishing Party a better result.
Whatever the affect of the religious invocation the outcome for the seat of Sydney is now thankfully in the hands of the voters and not some enigmatic heavenly spirits. As the Sex Party says, let’s keep religion out of politics…and vote 1 Andrew Patterson for Sydney.

Andrew Patterson is an active Sex Party member in NSW, and will be running for the seat of Sydney (held by independent MP and Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore) in the Legislative Assembly at the NSW State election in March 2011. Whilst the Sex Party name cannot appear on a NSW Election ballot paper (due to prohibitive political party registration requirements: click here for more details) Andrew will have the full backing of the Australian Sex Party.
Andrew joined the Sex Party before the federal election in 2010, finally finding a political party which matched his social views.
He was a police officer in WA for many years, leaving the Force as a Detective Sergeant, having specialized in child protection and vice. He has worked in a number of public sector roles since then, including as Chief Investigator with the NSW Independent Commission Against Corruption, and Specialist Investigator with the NSW Ombudsman.
Andrew has two Masters degrees, one of which is a Master of Ethics and Legal Studies, for which he wrote a dissertation aimed at establishing the moral neutrality of prostitution.
