'Remarkable' gay marriage win for Iowa
In the United States supporters of same-sex marriage have recently notched up some big victories. Five states now recognise gay marriage and several others are embarking on similar efforts, but it does not mean the heated battles over this controversial issue are waning.
This month Maine became the fifth state to legalise same-sex marriage, joining Vermont, Iowa, Massachusetts and Connecticut. The New Hampshire legislature has also passed a same-sex marriage bill, although the Governor has not signed it yet, and in Washington DC the city council has agreed to recognise same sex marriages in other states.
