Parliament has been debating changes to adoption laws which include allowing de facto couples to adopt, but the laws maintain a ban on adoption by gay and lesbian couples.

But Ms Pratt has told the House that the first preference should be given to married couples.

"I'm quite determined that in my lifetime I will never support homosexuals adopting children and to that extent [though] not quite so strongly, I'm against de facto parents adopting children," she said.

Labor MP Peta Keye-Croft says she and her de facto partner considered adoption and find's Ms Pratt's comments offensive.

"Loving couples who are prepared to open their homes to a child who requires an adoptive placement are the greatest asset of Queensland's adoption programs as they are able to provide children with love, nurturing and opportunities in life that they wouldn't have had otherwise," she said.
