Women Candidates in Spotlight
Of the 53 parties running for the senate in Victoria, only eight have lead female candidates. With the exception of Jacqui Lambie and Pauline Hanson, very few female candidates have received any media attention.
To put the focus back on women in politics, a new debate, moderated by The Guardian Australia’s Gay Alcorn will be on at the Kelvin Club Melbourne tomorrow (Tuesday June 28, 7pm).The Great XX Debate, hosted in conjunction with the Australian Sex Party, will feature candidates from across the political spectrum including the Australian Christians, Palmer United, Flux Party and the Arts Party to name a few.
“During this very long election campaign it has been rare to hear a female voice,” said Australian Sex Party Leader and Victorian MP Fiona Patten. “This debate aims to provide at least one platform for the diverse range of views of women running in this election.”
“For those concerned about the under-representation of women in politics, The Great XX Debate provides a unique opportunity to hear from a panel of lead female Senate candidates offering diverse party positions across many philosophical lines," said Vickie Janson of the Australian Christians. "Not to be missed."
“Finally, after the media's deliberate attempts to convince voters that their only options are ALP or LNP, we have a debate with the female lead candidates from the smaller parties,” said Palmer United candidate Catriona Thoolen. “I know the debate will be civilised and based around finding consensus - because that is what women do best.”
The debate will cover a range of subjects from superannuation to marriage equality – all from a female perspective.
