Australia’s standing in the world community was suffering because of a deafening silence over Iran’s imminent execution of Sakineh Ashtian on trumped up charges of adultery. The Australian Sex Party has called on Australia’s first female Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition to take a strong stand for women around the world by issuing Iran with a series of ultimatums and making an effort to unite women’s groups around the world to stop tomorrow’s horrendous execution.

The only other female leader of a political party in Australia, Fiona Patten, said that the impending execution was an affront to everything that the Australian way of life stood for and that the Prime Minister had a duty to publicly state Australia’s revulsion at this planned act of barbarism.

“Most of Australia’s Muslim population are deeply offended by this state-sanctioned murder and every woman in Australia is outraged that a country which we trade with could possibly execute someone for a moral crime such as adultery”, she said. “If Australia executed women who have had a fling or an affair outside marriage, 70% of the nation’s women would be dead”.

She said that Julia Gillard should immediately threaten to suspend Australia’s $50 million imports from Iran unless the regime agreed to overturn the death penalty on women for adultery. “Australia should be approaching Iran’s major importers and exporters like Japan, Germany, China and Turkey to form some sort of international pressure group”, she said. “It would be a pity for Australia’s international standing if either the Government or the Opposition failed to speak out about this issue because it involved sexual infidelity or other notions of public morality that extremists in the Labor and Liberal parties had issues with”.
