Sex Party runs for Lord Mayor of Brisbane PDF  | Print |  E-mail

Sex Party member, Rory Killen has nominated to run for the office of Brisbane Lord Mayor. We are very proud and excited to support him in this endeavor. Below is Rory's statement outlining why he decided to run and some of the issues he will be pushing for.

"Brisbane’s musicians have worked hard to create an international reputation for new and exciting work. The city has not supported this.

As Lord Mayor I’ll foster independent music by protecting venues from burdensome zoning requirements, connecting the city’s entertainment precincts with improved late night transport, and restore Brisbane’s reputation as the City of House Parties with reduced noise restrictions in the inner city.”

Sexual politics put a black mark on Brisbane’s reputation with the recent Adshel fiasco, during which the Australian Christian Lobby launched a homophobic attack on safe-sex advertising. “Safer sex campaigners deserve material support from council. I’m ready to provide as many bus shelters, billboards or public spaces as necessary to ensure the great work of sexual health campaigners can continue.

I’ll further enhance public health by establishing and funding a safe injecting facility in the Valley – protecting both users and the wider community. I’ll work with state government to ensure harm minimisation and public health forms the corner stone of drug policy in Brisbane.

I’m excited to offer Brisbane a Sex Party choice for Lord Mayor – a real alternative for an open minded and modern Brisbane."

Dear QLD Sex Party Members,

In addition to the meeting in Toowoomba on Friday night, we thought we'd have a meeting in Brisbane this Saturday 10th March at 6:00pm upstairs at The Plough Inn, Southbank. This will be your chance to come and say hi to our fearless leader, Fiona Patten.

Please come along or send any friends or family who are interested in the party. We'll have some of our sexy t-shirts and stubby coolers to sell to help with our campaign costs.

This will be a fairly informal get-together, so we look forward to seeing as many of you as possible for a drink and a chat. This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it if you can attend.

Cheers,

Anne Watson

Election uncertainty as Supreme Court sorts The Australian Party wrangle PDF  | Print |  E-mail

The Supreme Court will rule today on whether The Australian Party can legally stand as an abbreviation of Katter's Australian Party at Queensland's March 24 election.

Such an abbreviation is, the latter argues, a form of discrimination.

Founded by the maverick federal Independent MP for the vast federal seat of Kennedy, Bob Katter, the party has announced that if its abbreviation is allowed to stand, it could challenge the result in up to 76 of the 89 seats in Queensland's one-house parliament.

Katter's attempts to change the way his party is represented on the ballot paper at the looming Queensland election may never have got to this point had the Electoral Commission of Queensland (ECQ) applied commonsense and a fair go to another party attempting to register.

It's one of those 'what if' stories that could have thrown the election result wide open.

The Australian Sex Party applied for registration in Queensland last year by lodging the standard 500 signed membership forms with the ECQ.

Under the state laws for registering political parties, the ECQ then writes back to those 500 people asking them to re affirm that they are bona fide members of the party.

It also checks that they are all on the electoral roll, which they all were.
