Fiona Patten of the Australian Sex Party Talk to Moron Watch PDF  | Print |  E-mail
Written by MoronWatch: Watching morons, so you don't have to

The Australian Sex Party is a recently-formed progressive political party, with a strong emphasis on civil liberties. Dismayed that none of the mainstream parties were prepared to stand up to lobbyists from the religious right, Fiona Patten and her colleagues founded the new party and stood for election against those who supported the introduction of strong Internet censorship in Australia. Fiona recently visited London, and Moron Watch took the opportunity to interview her.

Melbourne byelection: Labor play for Sex favours pays offs PDF  | Print |  E-mail

Gambling reform campaigner Stephen Mayne has indicated he will preference the Greens above Labor, but Sex Party preferences - a potential key factor in the byelection - will favour Labor.

The first how-to-vote handouts have emerged, shedding light on preferences.

Labor appears to have snubbed Mr Mayne's overtures at a preference deal, placing him 12th on the how-to-vote guide.

Labor's cards ask voters to put Democrat David James Collyer second and Sex Party candidate Fiona Patten third.

Her party took more than 8 per cent of the vote in the 2012 Niddrie byelection but only 2.89 per cent in Melbourne in 2010.

She said Sex Party preferences could be the deciding factor in the election. The Greens preferenced Family First candidate Ashley Fenn last and are seventh on Labor's how-to-vote card.

Neither party's how-to-vote card places their lead rival last - the Greens have Labor's Jennifer Kanis ninth, while Labor gives the Greens' Cathy Oke 15th position.

Mr Mayne criticised the Labor how-to-vote card, saying it favours "the reactionary religious right" ahead of the Greens. "This is a progressive inner-city seat," Mr Mayne said. "They should change it [the card] ahead of election day."

Labor state secretary Noah Carroll said it was a "Melbourne Cup field" of candidates. "Our current how-to vote guide is seeking to maximise the Labor vote by designing it for ease of marking," he said.

He would not comment on the positions of the Sex Party, Family First and DLP.

Can You Help Out At Melbourne's ByElection? PDF  | Print |  E-mail

Volunteers will be vital to the success of the Australian Sex Party at this by-election. The support and inspiration we receive from people willing to donate their time to help us is the key to our success as a political party.

It is absolutely simple...

Sex Party volunteers on polling booths handing out How-To-Vote cards = Votes!

Handing out How-To-Vote cards on election day (or at pre-polling booths during the lead up) is fun and easy. You get to meet like-minded people and spread the word about the Australian Sex Party.

ELECTION DAY Saturday 21 July!!

There are 14 polling booths and we absolutely need at least 35 people to help us. There is no doubt that having Sex Party volunteers on polling booths increases our vote. Can you help us on this most important day of days?

If you can spare a few hours in Melbourne on Saturday the 21st of July and would like to give us a hand, please get in contact today! Email: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it to get more information or to register your interest.

There are quite a few other ways to help that will hopefully fit into your timetable.
You can see all of the dates and events at our Volunteer Event Signup Sheet

Early Voting
Over 25% of voters will vote early and nearly half will do that during the week in the city (Collins st and Lonsdale st)
These centres are open from 8.30 am- 6pm Monday to Friday
Can you spare a couple of hours to don a yellow t-shirt and hand out fliers at an early voting centre?

Train Stations and selected maxi Tram stops
We need people to hand out fliers to commuters from 7am- 9am and at a few places after work from 5-6.30pm
Locations include Kensington, Flemington, Southern Cross and Carlton. (there are other places also)
Could you don thermals and a yellow shirt and help at your local station?

Bannering
I think this is pretty unique to the Sex Party. We meet around 7am at a busy corner with banners and placards to wave at local commuters. I think it is a great free way to expose local voters to us.
Can you help wave at cars?

Weekend Markets and Supermarkets
After you have done your grocery shopping can you help us hand out fliers at local supermarkets and markets?

A Frames
I need some simple A frames for election day, can anyone help make these?

Donate !
If you can spare a few dollars http://www.sexparty.org.au/Party-Info/donate.html

Cant help out on the 21st of July, but would like to know what else you can do?

1. Vote 1 Fiona Patten and the Australian Sex Party on 21 July if you live in the electorate of Melbourne.
2. Tell your friends about us! Talk to them face-to-face, "Like" Fiona's Facebook Page and Follow her on Twitter.
3. Can you put a Sex Party poster in your window or a banner in your yard? It is really important to let everyone in the electorate know that we’re here, so we will happily deliver posters to anyone who can help.
4. Put a Sex Party Banner on your website or blog. Click here to grab a banner and don't forget to link it back to sexparty.org.au.
5. Got some free time? Come and hang out with us in our bright yellow tshirts as we pub-crawl, talk and dance our way through Melbourne. There’s always something happening, email us for more details.
