The Australian Sex Party kicks off its first Victorian election campaign at 11am (tomorrow), 15.11.10, at Miss Libertine in the city.
Party President and candidate for the Northern Metro region, Fiona Patten, said that the cornerstone of the Sex Party’s platform was that its policies were formulated and written by real people, many of whom were standing as candidates. “Our policies on prostitution are written by our sex worker candidates, our transport policies are written by a candidates who catch buses and trains, and our GLBTIQ policies are written by GLBTIQ candidates”, she said. “There are no suits in the Sex Party”.
Attending the launch will be the first public appearances of ‘fake’ Brumby and ‘fake’ Baillieu – giant caricatures that will roam the streets of Melbourne in Victorian-era clothing for the next couple of weeks drawing attention to the socially conservative policies that Labor, Liberal and even the Greens are taking to this election.
Special guest speaker at the launch will be founder and director of the Melbourne Underground Film Festival (MUFF) Richard Wolstencroft, who will make his first public appearance since being raided by Victorian Police last week for screening a Bruce La Bruce's controversial film 'L.A. Zombie'. The film had previously been screened at the Locarno and Toronto Film Festivals without incident.
The Sex Party secured the website www.victorianelection.com.au to run its campaign from and to mount its policies. Ms Patten said that the Sex Party’s satirical campaign video, ‘The Victorian Election’ has been viewed by almost 25,000 people in only a few days since it was posted on line making it the most viewed online video of any state election campaign.
The Sex Party will field 25 candidates contesting four Upper House seats and 17 Lower House seats, Many of the candidates will be at the launch. One who will not is the world famous Victorian adult screen super-star, Angela White, who will be running against the Greens anti-prostitution campaigner, Kathleen Maltzhan in the seat of Richmond. Ms White who is finishing a Masters Degree will be available later in the week.
Ms Patten said that as in federal election campaign, over one third of Sex Party candidates were openly gay, lesbian or bi-sexual, and nearly half were women, and that candidates in the Victorian state election were similarly diverse.
