Following DEEWR Minister Peter Garrett’s 7 September 2011 statement promising to introduce secular student welfare workers, DEEWR has now released a list of suppliers.
“ACCESS Ministries are joined by Youth For Christ and Christians Helping In Primary Schools as suppliers of the new secular school position in Victoria, with similar Christian organisations taking up the role in other parts of Australia,” Australian Secular Lobby national spokesman Hugh Wilson said.
“Undeterred by any gasps of incredulity from those in Victoria who know the work of ACCESS in their state schools, Minister Garrrett’s department is now to provide ACCESS with access to all Australian public schools to provide both religious chaplains and the new style secular Student Welfare Workers,” Hugh Wilson said.
“The Prime Minister has stooped to a new low in cynicism to shore up her flagging support from the Australian Christian Lobby by using public school children as pawns in her vote chasing game of chess.
“This burgeoning religious industry is not the solution to whatever problems may confront the Australian public education system and Minister Garrett needs to review this decision.” Hugh Wilson said.
