THE uniquely named Australian Sex Party has applied to the Australian Electoral Commission to be registered as a party and receive a chunk of election funding, generously supplied by the taxpayer, the occasion providing an irresistible opportunity for wordsmiths.
It could be the first time that "election" and that other word with an "r" go hand-in-hand, so to speak. The party, convened by eroto-political campaigner Fiona Patten, notes on its website: "Our members' needs always come first." Boom-boom. The party's "secret political and spiritual adviser" is a Dick Tracy lookalike called Curly Merkin and for those unfamiliar with the surname, consult a dictionary.

Australian Sex Party leader, Fiona Patten, has called on the Prime Minister to visit an Asian brothel in Australia so he can see first hand the negative effects of his government’s appalling changes to visas for sex workers.
Immigration Minister Chris Evans’ plans to give trafficked sex workers a new 45 day access visa without altering the government’s prohibition on working visas for bona fide sex workers. This would result in even more misery and sex slavery in Australia, according to Ms Patten.
“Solving the problem of illegal sex workers in this country is a no-brainer”, she said. “It simply requires the PM to acknowledge that prostitution is a legitimate profession or calling, for many women”.
Ms Patten, who worked as a sex worker advocate in the 1990s, said the federal government’s ban on working visas for sex workers was the major reason that allowed sex trafficking to flourish in Australia. “If bona fide sex workers were able to apply for a working visa to work in a legal brothel in Australia for six or 12 months at a time, the low-life pimps and operators who traffic women into this country would have the ground cut out from under them and they would have nothing to offer these women”, she said. “The problem is Kevin Rudd’s morality will not allow him to acknowledge sex work as a formal and legitimate job even though it is legal in most states. Meanwhile his moral ‘dilemma’ is ruining many women’s lives.”
The Australian Sex Party would lobby strongly for a change to visa and discrimination policies to overcome this problem, if elected to the Senate at the next federal election. Legitimate sex workers who applied for a working visa would have to demonstrate a good working knowledge of sex work practises and safe sex techniques. They would have to pay tax, superannuation, supply a nominated residential address and have a guarantee of returning to the country of origin, when they first entered Australia.

We have finally shaken off the last of the post Sexpo hangover and the memories are returning - we had such a fantastic time over in Perth!
We held our very first public Sex Party party at the Metro bar, which was lots of fun. We also had a very successful stand at Sexpo and signed up a bunch of new members to the Party.
I would like to give a huge thanks to all our wonderful volunteers who helped us out on the stand xox. In fact it was one of our volunteers who won the amateur strip on Friday night, woohoo!! Thanks also to our stand manager, Claire, who was amazingly adept at putting temporary tattoos on boobs and penises alike.
I hope everyone who came along to Sexpo had as much fun as we did!

When you hear "Sex Party," the first thing you think of isn't politics. But Australia's Sex Party is the real deal and means it.
The Australian Sex Party states: "We're serious about sex -- The Australian Sex Party is a political response to the sexual needs of Australia in the 21st century. It is an attempt to restore the balance between sexual privacy and sexual publicity that has been severely distorted by morals campaigners and prudish politicians."
The Sex Party was convened by Fiona Patten, who has worked as a lobbyist for the adult industry for more than 20 years, heading up Eros, Australia's national adult retail and entertainment association.
"In that time we have managed to prevent federal and state governments from wiping out the legal adult industry entirely but in general, laws restricting the adult industry have remained in place although generally overlooked," Patten told AVN.com in an exclusive interview.
The Sex Party has been a vocal opponent of the current Aussie government's mandatory ISP filtering scheme, which has been well-covered by AVN.com. The plan would force ISPs to filter out all material deemed as sexually explicit, not just child pornography as its proponents initially claimed.
"This was the proverbial straw," Patten said. "We thought if we cannot affect law reform with common sense arguments, broad community support backed up with independent research and numerous national polls then we need to get into parliament."
Patten said the current Australian Senate has a number of independents that hold the balance of power.

SADLY, no one will let us publish its contents . . . but rest assured there will be plenty of interest in a new NRL Sex Pack being offered exclusively to players.
Sport Confidential can reveal the Australian Sex Party is offering footballers the best value showbag since Bertie Beetle.
Sex Party convener Fiona Patten said rather than making light of issues exposed in a recent Four Corners report, the unique sex pack serves as a warning to NRL boss David Gallop that treating players differently from society only creates more problems.
Ms Patten used as an example the outcry surrounding Cronulla players and alleged sex toy gifts - explaining that a 2002 La Trobe University paper found 20 per cent of Australian women used them.
"And I'd say numbers are rising for both men and women," Ms Patten said. "Which is why we're offering our exclusive pack to every club in the NRL.
"Because we should be doing more to educate all players about sex. About relationships and sexual health. But what we're doing now is going back to those days of repressing sex and sexuality . . . we're pushing it back under the counter, so to speak."
Speaking from Sexpo in Perth, Ms Patten said she also loved the push by NSW Origin legend Tommy Raudonikis to save the NRL cheergirl.
